Thomas Tuchel steps in as England's new manager, becoming the third non-British coach in the role, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

He takes over after Gareth Southgate's resignation in July, following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Lee Carsley will remain at the helm for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland, having led the team in four games as interim manager since August.

Anthony Barry, an English coach, will serve as Tuchel's assistant. Tuchel previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich.

Tuchel said: "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.

"I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.

"To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting."

Chief executive Mark Bullingham said the Football Association had appointed "one of the best coaches in the world".

The FA said Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, was the "preferred candidate" from the "several candidates" interviewed.

It said the FA board approved the decision last week and Tuchel signed a contract on 8 October.

"The announcement was delayed to minimise distraction around the international camp that has just concluded," a statement read.

While the FA has not publicly addressed the growing speculation surrounding Tuchel, reports indicate that chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott have been in discussions with the former Chelsea boss since last month. If appointed, Tuchel would become the third non-Englishman to lead the national team, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel brings a wealth of elite-level experience, having led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, as well as having managed Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. His potential appointment follows earlier reports suggesting the FA had approached Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. 

From the onset of its recruitment process in July, the FA made it clear that nationality was not a determining factor; they were focused solely on securing the best candidate for the role.

Meanwhile, U21 coach Lee Carsley has been overseeing the senior team during their Nations League fixtures this autumn. While he was considered a candidate for the permanent position, uncertainty about his own ambitions has led to renewed speculation about the managerial role.

England interim boss Lee Carsley got the perfect response from his players as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over Finland in League B Group 2 of the UEFA Nations League.

Just three days after a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Greece, the Three Lions made Helsinki their playground, with Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Declan Rice finding the net before Arttu Hoskonen spoiled Dean Henderson's late clean sheet.

After the humbling defeat, Carsley abandoned his striker-less experiment, making six changes, including the return of fit-again captain Harry Kane, to reinforce the squad for the Scandinavian showdown.

Two of the new faces, Angel Gomes and Grealish, combined brilliantly for a well-deserved opener in the first half, as England capitalized on their dominance in possession, looking sharper and more resilient than in their previous outing.

Carsley Anticipates Strong Response from 'More Traditional' England!'

Carsley opted for an attacking lineup featuring five forwards but no traditional striker in Thursday’s home clash against Greece, showcasing the talents of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, and Phil Foden. 

However, the bold experiment backfired, as defensive errors contributed to the 2-1 loss, leading to Carsley facing his first wave of criticism.

“I think the reaction is fair enough. You have to respect people’s opinions,” Carsley told reporters on Saturday.

“We didn’t perform as well as we can on the night, and I would expect a reaction tomorrow night. I think it’s something that I’ll look back on in maybe two or three months and be better for it.”

Carsley is poised to lead England through the remainder of their group games, and while the interim manager is eager to make his mark, he's likely to revert to a more proven lineup for the Finland match.

“I wanted to give this job my best shot for the three camps. I didn’t want to have any regrets,” he said.

“It was important that we do try something different at times and I think I’ll be a better coach for that, but I think we’ll probably be a little bit more conventional tomorrow night.”
