Inter Miami CF Clinches Historic 6-2 Victory Over New England Revolution, Sets New MLS Points Record...
Inter Miami CF completed a stunning comeback with a 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Chase Stadium, concluding the 2024 regular season on a high note. This triumph allowed the team to establish a new single-season points record in Major League Soccer, finishing with 74 points—surpassing the previous 73 set by the Revolution in 2021.
The standout performance came from Lionel Messi, who entered the match as a second-half substitute and made an immediate impact. He scored a remarkable hat trick and provided an assist, making MLS history as just the fifth player to record at least 36 goal contributions in a single season. Messi also became the first player to net three goals and add an assist as a substitute in a match. With his three goals, he also became Inter Miami's all-time leading scorer, reaching 33 goals and surpassing Leonardo Campana's tally of 32.
The match started poorly for Inter Miami, with the Revolution taking an early lead through Luca Langoni in the second minute. Williot Swedberg doubled the advantage for New England in the 34th minute. However, Luis Suárez ignited Miami's comeback by scoring their first goal in the 40th minute, finishing a well-executed team play. Just minutes later, Suárez struck again to equalize just before halftime, showcasing his scoring prowess with his 20th goal of the season.
The game-changing moment came in the 58th minute when Messi was substituted in for Julian Gressel. Almost immediately, he delivered a brilliant pass to Jordi Alba, who assisted Benjamin Cremaschi for Miami’s third goal, giving them the lead. Messi then showcased his skill with three goals in quick succession—scoring in the 78th, 81st, and 89th minutes—sealing the emphatic victory and capping off an extraordinary performance.
"This 6-2 win is a significant boost of confidence for the team," said head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino. "As we said before, these 74 points weren't something planned or a goal we had when the season started, but as it became within reach, we tried to achieve it, and today we were able to do so. And for me, the pride of being part of this group, to whom I’m thankful along with my coaching staff and everyone who works with us day by day and makes sacrifices. The truth is, it's a victory for all of us who make up the Inter Miami family."
With this historic win, Inter Miami CF not only claimed all three points but also etched their name in the league record books.
