  • Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea propels them to the top of the Premier League, one point ahead of Manchester City, following Arsenal's loss to Bournemouth.
  • Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot, and despite Chelsea's equaliser from Nicolas Jackson, Curtis Jones quickly restored Liverpool's lead. The match featured several controversial penalty calls, with VAR playing a significant role in decision-making.
  • The defeat leaves Chelsea in sixth place, seven points behind Liverpool, as they failed to capitalize on chances to equalize despite a strong push in the second half.

Curtis Jones shone as Liverpool secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chelsea, finishing the weekend at the top of the Premier League, one point ahead of Manchester City. This win follows Arsenal’s loss to Bournemouth. At the same time, City triumphed at Wolves, increasing the pressure on Arne Slot's side in what the Liverpool manager called their toughest test of the season.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half. Although Chelsea equalized shortly after halftime with Nicolas Jackson's goal, confirmed as onside by VAR, Jones quickly restored Liverpool's lead, flicking the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The match was filled with pivotal moments, starting early when Tosin Adarabioyo avoided a red card for a foul on Diogo Jota. In a series of contentious penalty calls, Trent Alexander-Arnold escaped punishment for stepping on Jadon Sancho’s foot in the box, while Salah was frustrated after not receiving a penalty for a challenge by Levi Colwill. However, Colwill did concede a penalty shortly afterwards when he kicked Jones in the shin, following Jones's critical block on a Cole Palmer shot.

Salah successfully converted the penalty, sending Sanchez the wrong way. Although Salah thought he might earn another penalty in stoppage time when Sanchez brought down Jones, the decision was overturned after a VAR review determined Sanchez had played the ball first.

Despite Chelsea pushing for an equalizer, with opportunities for Palmer and a late header from Renato Veiga, they couldn't find the finishing touch. The defeat leaves Chelsea in sixth place, seven points adrift of the league leaders, while Liverpool celebrates their tenth win in eleven matches under Slot as they navigate a challenging fixture list.
