Chelsea secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Panathinaikos in Athens, continuing their strong start in the UEFA Conference League. Joao Felix was the star of the show, scoring twice, while Mykhailo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku each added a goal, solidifying Chelsea’s position at the top of the league phase table.
The match took place at the Athens Olympic Stadium, which was filled with emotion as tributes were paid to George Baldock, the former Sheffield United defender who tragically passed away recently. Fans raised placards displaying his squad number, 32, as a version of David Bowie’s "Starman" played over the PA, creating a poignant atmosphere.
Chelsea faced early pressure but weathered the storm. Filip Jorgensen made a key save to deny Tin Jedvaj, while Azzedine Ounahi came close with a dipping shot. The Blues broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Felix glanced a header to Mudryk, who set him up for a simple finish.
Just two minutes after halftime, Mudryk doubled Chelsea's lead with a header from Pedro Neto's cross. Felix then struck again, benefiting from a fortunate deflection that left Panathinaikos goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski with no chance. Chelsea's dominance was confirmed when Nkunku converted a penalty after Daniel Mancini handled in the box, despite facing distractions from lasers in the crowd.
Panathinaikos managed a consolation goal through Facundo Pellistri, who tapped in a cross, but it was too little, too late for the Greek side.
Diego Alonso, Panathinaikos manager, reflected on the match:
"We played a good game for 22 minutes, then we made an error and it led to the first goal. In the second half, we lost our concentration for 15 minutes and this was enough to let in three goals. This happens when you play against a top team in the Premier League. When you commit an error, you play hard."
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca praised Mudryk’s development:
"We're working with him and all the wingers. They need to arrive inside the box in the position where Misha scored. He's struggled to arrive there, and now he's started to. That's where we're going to score goals. We want the best for Misha; since day one we've tried to help him. Probably he's one of the guys whose learning process is slower compared to the rest. But he's improving. I'm sure that slowly, slowly we're going to arrive where he will score more goals and be more important for us."
On the team's identity despite making 11 changes, Maresca added:
"The most important thing is no matter how many players we change, you can see the identity of the team. The identity is quite clear. What we want is exactly what they're doing; taking the chance when we give it to them. Tonight once again they showed that."
With this victory, Chelsea continues their impressive form, having scored four goals or more in five games across all competitions this season.
